Skutt Catholic High School began its mock trial program in the 2003-2004 school year. Skutt Catholic has been a regional winner every year it has competed. Skutt Catholic has gone on to State competition every year it has been in the program. We were Nebraska State Champions in 2006, 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012 and State Champion runner up in 2008. As Nebraska State Champions we have competed at the National High School Mock Trial Championship in Dallas, Texas (2007), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2010), Phoenix, Arizona (2011), and Albuquerque, New Mexico (2012), Indiana (2013) finishing 3rd and the American Mock Trial Invitational in New Brunswick, New Jersey in 2009.
Each year, a case packet is distributed to all participating schools in late August. Tryouts are held before the case is distributed. The case packet is a series of documents including the charges, penal code, stipulations, case law, and jury instructions as well as all of the exhibits and witness statements. During a mock trial, competitors are restricted to only the materials provided in the case packet and may not reference any outside sources. In order to prepare for competition, teams thoroughly read and analyze the case packet.
Mock Trial teams consist of a minimum of six and a maximum of eight members. Skutt Catholic has two mock trial teams. Each team prepares both sides of the case. Each side is composed of three lawyers and three witnesses. Practices begin in late August and competition begins in October at the Douglas County Courthouse. The Nebraska State Champion competition is in early December. The National High School Mock Trial Championship is held in early May.
