Spanish I

Course Credit: 2

Course Description:

First year Spanish provides an introduction to the five language skill levels of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking in a foreign language. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and basic grammar concepts. Aspects of the Hispanic culture are taught as an integral part of the learning process.

Spanish II

Course Credit: 2
Prerequisite: : Spanish I or successful completion of the Spanish Placement Exam (given to incoming Freshmen only)

Course Description:

This course further enhances the skills learned in Spanish I and continues the development of the target language. Skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking are practiced in the classroom. Emphasis will be placed on grammar.

Honors Spanish II

Course Credit: 2(W)
Prerequisite: Grade of B+ or higher in Spanish I or successful completion of the Spanish Placement Exam (given to incoming Freshmen only) and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

This course enhances the skills learned in Spanish I and continues the development of the target language. Emphasis will be placed on grammar. Skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking are practiced in the classroom. Students are required to complete projects in Spanish as selected by the instructor.

Honors Spanish II-III

Prerequisite: : Spanish I with a grade of A or higher and teacher recommendation

Course Description:

In Honors Spanish II-III, all concepts covered in both Spanish II and Spanish III are covered at an accelerated speed. Enrollment in Honors Spanish II-III prepares students rigorously for future Spanish classes and makes it possible for the student to progress through Honors Spanish V by graduation from SCHS.

Spanish III

Prerequisite: Grade of C or higher in Spanish II or Honors Spanish II

Course Description:

This course provides instruction in advanced grammar and verb conjugations with increased practice in writing and speaking. There will be reading assignments and discussion in Spanish.

Honors Spanish III

Course Credit: 2(W)
Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors Spanish II or grade of B+ or higher in Spanish II and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Honors Spanish III will emphasize advanced grammar with increased writing and speaking. There will also be readings of short stories with in-depth discussions in the target language. Students are required to complete projects as selected by the instructor.

Spanish IV

Prerequisite: Grade of C or higher in Spanish III/Honors Spanish III

Course Description:

Spanish IV involves the application of the language skills learned in the previous Spanish courses. Varied topics of the customs and culture of Hispanic people are presented. There is more emphasis in oral communication through discussions and simulations of real life situations. Grammatical concepts are reviewed and new ones learned.

Honors Spanish IV

Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors Spanish III or grade of B+ or higher in Spanish III and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Spanish IV focuses on advanced grammar and composition and will incorporate outside reading. Most of the class will be conducted in Spanish. Students are required to complete projects as selected by the instructor.

Honors Spanish V

Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors Spanish IV and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Spanish V will continue the study of the five language skills. It will include more literature, advanced grammar, and writing. Discussion will be conducted in Spanish. Students have the option of taking this class for college credit through Dual Enrollment at UNO. Students choosing to take this course for college credit are responsible for paying all tuition and applicable fees.

French 1

Course Description:

First year French provides an introduction to the five language skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking in the target language. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary acquisition, pronunciation, and basic grammar concepts. Cultural aspects of the French speaking world are taught as an integral part of the learning process.

French II

Course Credit: 2
Prerequisite: French I or successful completion of the French Placement Exam (given to incoming Freshmen only)

Course Description:

French II will reinforce and expand the basic language skills introduced in French I. Greater emphasis will be placed on understanding the patterns of daily living which characterize French culture, and on developing the oral communication skills needed to function in a French speaking setting.

Honors French II

Prerequisite: Grade of B+ or higher in French I or satisfactory completion of the French placement exam (given to incoming Freshmen only) and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Honors French II will reinforce and expand the basic language skills introduced in French I. Greater emphasis will be placed on understanding the patterns of daily living which characterize French culture, and on developing the oral communication skills needed to function in a French speaking setting. Students will be introduced to the reading of short works of fiction in French. Enrichment projects will be assigned.

French III

Prerequisite: Grade of C or higher in French II/Honors French II

Course Description:

French III will expand the five skill areas of language study mentioned in the course descriptions for French I and II with greater concentration on the usage of various tenses in both the spoken and written language.

Honors French III-IV

Course Credit: 2(W)
Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors French II and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Completion of this accelerated class allows students to take Honors French V in their junior or senior year. The materials are the same as for French III and French IV, but the pace is faster and the expectations are higher. Most of the class will be conducted in French.

French IV

Course Credit: 2
Prerequisite: Grade of C or higher in French III/Honors French III

Course Description:

French IV involves the application of the language skills learned in the previous French courses. Varied topics concerning the customs and cultures of France, Canada, and other French speaking countries are presented. There is increasing emphasis on oral communication through discussions and simulations of real life situations. Grammatical concepts are reviewed and new ones are learned.

Honors French V

Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors French III/IV and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Honors French V utilizes a college level text to strengthen the students’ language skills while broadening their knowledge and appreciation of francophone culture. Equal emphasis will be given to vocabulary acquisition, grammar study, reading of authentic materials, listening practice, and meaningful communication. The course will be conducted in French. Students who elect to take this class for college credit through Dual Enrollment at UNO are responsible for paying all tuition and applicable fees.

German I

Course Description:

First year German provides an introduction to the five language skill areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking in German. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary, pronunciation, and basic grammar. Cultural aspects of the German speaking countries are integrated in the course materials. Students will have a variety of projects which enhance learning and strengthen skills through literature, songs, and prayers.

German II

Prerequisite: German I or successful completion of the German Placement Exam (given to incoming Freshmen only)

Course Description:

German II will continue to expand on the basic skills acquired in German I. Greater emphasis will be placed on understanding Germanic culture and developing conversational ability. Students will continue to have projects of a cultural nature which enhance learning in the target language. Students will also develop skills in translation from German to appropriate English.

Honors German II

Prerequisite: Grade of B+ or higher in German I or satisfactory completion of the German placement exam (given to incoming Freshmen only) and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

This course enhances the skills learned in German I and continues the development of the target language. Skills in reading, writing, listening, speaking, and thinking are practiced in the classroom. Students are required to complete additional projects on topics to be selected by the instructor.

German III

Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors German II or Grade of B+ or higher in German II and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

German III will explore Germanic culture in greater depth. Vocabulary, grammar, and translation work will continue to be emphasized, but at a more advanced level. Students will do more cooperative work and more writing in the target language. Authentic sources will continue to be used for projects which enhance cultural learning.

Honors German III-IV

Prerequisite: Grade of A in Honors German II and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Completion of this accelerated class allows students to take Honors German V in their junior or senior year. The materials are the same as for Honors German III and Honors German IV, but the pace is faster and the course is more focused on vocabulary, grammar, and translation.

Honors German IV

Prerequisite: A grade of B or higher in Honors German III or permission of instructor

Course Description:

Honors German IV will continue to refine the fundamental skills acquired in German I, II, and Honors German III. Translation work will be emphasized, as well as correct sentence structure. Students will become more personally involved in the learning process, and develop skills for a lifelong appreciation of the German language and culture.

Honors German V

Prerequisite: Grade of B or higher in Honors German IV and instructor recommendation

Course Description:

Honors German V will expand the study of appropriate grammatical usage of mood and tense and introduce students to a variety of authentic literary works and cultural artifacts. Students will be involved in cooperative translation work as well as independent writing as the rules of complex sentence structure are introduced and mastered. Students who elect to take this class for college credit through Dual Enrollment at UNO are responsible for paying all tuition and applicable fees.
